ALBERT THEODORE “TED” STANFORD, 92, beloved husband of Dorothy Elizabeth Jones Stanford, passed away Monday, May 22, 2023, in Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Ted, son of Aaron Albert Franklin Stanford and Julia Davaney Stanford of Augusta Ga, was born in Reading, Ohio. His commitment to his family was a lifelong trait as he spent a lot of time as a young boy traveling to Augusta to visit his grandparents and extended family.
After moving to Augusta from Ohio, Ted served on active duty with the US Navy as a reservist while attending Richmond Academy. Upon returning from an extended Naval cruise, he was surprised to find his family had moved to Athens, Ga. He finished his high school education at Athens High in 1948, then continued to serve on active duty with the US Navy on the USS Fred T. Berry. He ended his naval service at the end of the Korean war.
He then began his career with the Independent Life Insurance Company which eventually brought him to Aiken, his home since 1961. Ted had a 40-year career with the company retiring as District Manager. He was a member of Town Creek Baptist Church. As a 32nd Degree Mason, he was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on April 17, 1971, at the Aiken Masonic Lodge #156, AFM. Ted also served as a pilot with civil air patrol in both Spartanburg and Aiken Counties. In his retirement years, Ted, along with his wife Dot, enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and volunteering with the Aiken Meals on Wheels.
In addition to Dot, his wife of 65 years, he is survived by four children: Gregory S. Stanford (Penny), Aiken, SC; Gary Michael Stanford (Pat), Tallahassee, FL; Theresa (Teri) S. Kelly (Mike) Mt. Pleasant, SC ; and Julia (Libby) S. Demkowski (Walt), Fredericksburg, VA; two grandchildren: Andrew E. Demkowski and Bethany Robinson; his brother, Ronald Franklin Stanford, Jacksonville, FL. Ted also dearly loved his 7 nieces and nephews: Kenneth Stanford, Kathleen Shaw, Robi Hawley, Vicki Martinez, Domingo Martinez, Fritz Butler, and Jackie Anderson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Pam Roberts (granddaughter) and Nancy D. Stanford (sister-in-law).
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, May 31st beginning at 1 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 o’clock at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will be at Southlawn Cemetery.
