LTC Allen Samuel "Al" Snell, Jr. USA, Ret., 75, beloved husband of Cynthia Lominick Snell, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023 in Augusta University Medical Center following a brief illness.
A native of Johnston, SC, Al was a son of the late Allen Samuel and Margaret Fulmer Snell, Sr. Al served the U.S. Army with distinction for 22 years, followed by a 17-year career with the Savannah River Site.
Al spent countless hours in his yard, tending to his prized garden and plants, which he loved to share with friends and family. He and Cindy had a love for travel, which began during his years in the Army and continued into retirement with trips all over the world. What Al loved the most was spending time with his family, teaching his grandsons to tie the perfect bowtie, watching them on the ballfield, or sitting with them at church on Sundays. His steadfast faith was obvious to those who knew him and he never hesitated to talk openly about his love for our Savior.
He was married to the love of his life, Cindy, for 52 years. In addition to Cindy, survivors include two daughters, Mary Margaret Snell Jones (Molly) and husband Dewayne, and Sara Snell Whitaker and husband Scott. He also has one sister, Gayle Snell Potter and husband David Potter. He was extremely proud of his four grandsons, Samuel Allen Jones, Luke Collins Jones, Britton Daniel Whitaker and Tripp Denton Whitaker.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Bruce Karl and Charles Zebedee Snell.
The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, June 8th from 4 until 6 o’clock at the Snell family home.
A memorial service will be Friday morning, June 9th at 11 o’clock at St. John’s United Methodist Church with The Revs. Dr. W. Timothy McClendon and Greyson “Butch” Blackwell officiating. Private interment will be in the church’s columbarium. Pallbearers will be Ken Perrine, Jack Roberts, George Lawson, Steve Lathrop, Wayne Parrish, Buzz Skillman and Archie Hargett. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Growing Christians Sunday School Class.
