AIKEN, SC - Alma Juleda Moore Huber, 98, of Aiken, SC passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, December 2, 2018.  She was was born in Moore’s Springs, NC on February 18, 1920 and was the last surviving child of William Gabriel Moore and Minnie Eliza Gilmore Moore.

Alma spent her early years in Winston-Salem, NC, studied vocal music and dance, and graduated from Old Town School.  She had an opportunity to dance before the Queen of England in London or attend college; she chose college and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree.  She taught school and then worked for Greyhound Bus Company before moving to Washington, DC where she worked for the Navy Office of Research and Inventions where she did secret coding.  While in Washington she met and married Charles L. “Chuck” Huber of Buffalo, Iowa.  They moved to Rochester, NY in 1947 and then to farms in Byron and Marion, NY.   Alma and Chuck (an engineer and inventor for Xerox Corporation) retired and moved to Aiken, SC in 1977.

While in Aiken, Alma volunteered at the hospital, ACTS, and Hopelands Gardens.  She was a very active member of and contributor to the Aiken County Historical Museum and was appointed to the Aiken County Historical Commission.  Alma was a member of Town & Country where she started the Antique Group and was instrumental in establishing, in 1981, Aiken’s first Antique Show and Sale.   Alma tap danced well into her 90’s and continued to love music and movement until her death.  She was especially loving and giving, providing words of wisdom, joy and laughter, to many individuals throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck Huber; sisters, Ava Juanita Moore Marshall and Wilda Moore; brothers, William “Royce” Moore, Edward “Ed” Moore, Wilmer “Willie” Moore, and Homer Moore.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughter Janet M. Huber Kabel and her husband Jim of Aiken; a son John C. Huber of Charlotte, NC; and daughter Amy J. Huber Mefford and her husband Dan of Aiken; a sister-in-law Marjorie Huber Harmsen (Rich) of Durant, IA; grandchildren Kelly Mefford, Paul (Caitlin) Mefford, Kristy (Wes) Griffith;  Andrew, Melinda (Tom Wynn), and Selena Huber; Kyle Kabel; and seven great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews and other caring relatives and friends.  Extended family include the Truongs from South Vietnam who lived with the Hubers for almost three years in the 1970’s.

Thanks to Aiken Senior Life Center (formerly Aiken Area Council on Aging) and both Regency and Trinity Hospice for their support and guidance.  Special thanks to her many caregivers over these past 10 years.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Aiken Senior Life Center (P.O.
