Andrew H. West, affectionately known as Pete, peacefully passed away a few days after his 71st birthday, on July 11, 2024 in Aiken, SC. Pete had suffered from complications related to Dementia.
Pete was born in Worcester, Mass in 1953 and grew up with his four siblings Nancy Rowley (Sewell Rowley), Carol Wanstall (Donnie Wanstall), Doug West (Chris West), and Mary Jane Vanderdys (Joseph Vanderdys) in Newport News, VA. Pete was a graduate of Christopher Newport University. He had been a resident of Aiken, SC for almost 30 years, and previously resided in Belmont, NC, Marietta, GA, Charlotte, NC. and Martinez, GA. Pete worked as a salesman in the Industrial Piping and Valve Industry throughout the Southeast for most of his career. Pete loved his job, meeting up with customers and new people, driving all around the South, and of course, entertaining clients. You’d rarely have an interaction with Pete without hearing a new (or old) joke or even the latest hit song! There was never a dull or quiet moment with Pete around; he was the life of the party!
Pete was quite the active person over the years; he loved yard work, biking, golf, tennis, fishing, walking, pickleball, and cruising in his convertible. Pete was an amazing athlete and tennis player; he played tennis in college and various tennis leagues, and taught his daughters how to play tennis and ride bikes. Those who knew him well saw his love for all dogs, his family, helping others, music and singing, being a good friend, being “Grandpa Pete,” making people laugh, being a frequent blood donor, and keeping his neighborhood clean by picking up trash.
Pete left behind his two daughters, Margaret Elizabeth Wilson (Timothy Wilson) of Centennial, CO and Melinda Leigh Taylor (Dwane Taylor) of Meridian, MS. He had five grandchildren (Lauren Hollister, Ryan Edwards, Nan Edwards, Trevor Wilson, and Emma Wilson) and one great grandchild (Allison Hollister), as well as 9 nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle Pete;” ex-wife Dorothy Hartnett, best friend Billy Reid, and numerous caregivers and angels.
His death was preceded by first wife, Janis Diggs West, as well as his parents, Alden Adams West and Elizabeth Sweet West.
Pete was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and true friend who will be greatly missed.
A special thank you to the Aiken community for the kindness exhibited over the past few years.
A private family celebration will take place in the near future.
