Aiken - Mr. Bert Anderson Keppel, 86, widower of the late Nancy Black Keppel, passed away Friday, November 8, 2019 surrounded by his family. Born in Hackensack, NJ in 1933, Bert was the son of George Henry and Helen Anderson Keppel. Bert spent his summers with his family at Lake Erskine, NJ where he became a swimmer, sailor, and lifeguard. He served in the US Army in Korea and graduated from Westminster College in PA. Bert started his career in sales in New York City. He later moved to Vermont where he met and married Nancy Black of Barre, VT. Their marriage would last more than fifty years. The Keppels lived in Charlotte for many years, where Bert retired from Laminex, Inc. as the Customer Service Manager. Later they lived in Oak Island NC, Parker CO, and finally Aiken, where they enjoyed their new friends and church family. In addition to spending time with family and his many friends wherever he went, Bert enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, and sports. He swam competitively in college and later won gold medals for swimming in his late sixties and early seventies in his local Senior Games. He was a skier and snowmobiler as a younger man, took up tennis in his sixties, and played pickleball into his late seventies. Bert was devoted to his wife Nancy throughout their long lives together. Bert Keppel is survived by his son, George (Ashley) Keppel of Colorado; two grandchildren, Sophie and Jack Keppel; his sister Gail Butler of Aiken, and two nieces, Heather Karol and Holly Arisman of New Jersey. A memorial service will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, November 23, 2019 at St. John’s United Methodist Church Chapel. The family will receive friends in Ward Hall following the service.
