Betty Lou Windham LeGrand

BETTY LOU WINDHAM LEGRAND, 96 years of age, passed away on Monday morning, August 14, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Betty was born on August 8, 1927 in Sumter, SC to the late James and Louise Windham. She was one of 10 children; seven preceded her in death. Betty married C.C. (Butch) LeGrand on November 20, 1947 and had three daughters.

Betty graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter, SC in 1943. Her senior year in high school, she received her home nursing certificate.  Betty graduated from Toumey Hospital School of Nursing in March 1947. She worked for South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and was a pioneer in the field of home health nursing.  She developed the home health pilot program for the entire state.   She retired from SCDHEC in July 1985 after 26 years of loyal and faithful service.

She was a longtime member of South Aiken Presbyterian Church.

Betty is survived by her three children - Elizabeth Pearson (Ralph), Peggy Plyler (Dan) and Julie Paradise (Dickie), her six grandchildren – Aimee Heard (Jonathan), Jennifer Pearson (Jeff), Stephen Paradise (Jennifer), Daniel Plyler (Kristi), Derek Paradise (Shawna) and Dianna Kubacz (Dean) and her 14 great-grandchildren. In addition, surviving are her sister Leah Talton, brother Julius Windham, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, August 16^th beginning at 2 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 3 o’clock with The Rev. Janet Tarbox officiating.  Interment will be in Southlawn Cemetery.
