Aiken – Mrs. Caroline Anna Sohnle Wieland, 80, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022.
Mrs. Wieland was born October 4th 1941 in New York City, NY, a daughter of the late Hans and Anna Mueller Sohnle. Raised in Queens, New York City and a graduate of Mary Louis Academy, Caroline joined the US Army International Teaching Staff and taught in the Bitburg, Germany elementary school system for three years. It was during this time that she met and married her husband, Fred. She was a world traveler visiting Europe, Africa, and Asia and was always interested in learning about other cultures and sharing her own. Her time abroad including living for four years in Japan where her younger son, Mark, was born. Having lived in Aiken for almost 30 years, she was active in the community as a member of several social clubs and garden clubs. She was founder of the Aiken International Club, the Great Decisions Discussion Group, and the non-fiction book club. Caroline interacted with the international students at USC helping them assimilate into the local community. She raised bonsai, about which she was a frequent lecturer demonstrating to local schools and civic groups. Caroline was an active member of the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Caroline and Fred were married for 54 happy and exciting years filled with wonderful memories. She was a great lady and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Eric Wieland, Lincoln, NE, and Mark Wieland, Columbia, SC.
A Memorial Service will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Gloverville at 9am on Wednesday, February 9.
