AIKEN, SC – Charles William “Chief Charlie” Cupp, III, 88, died peacefully, Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at his residence.
A native and lifelong resident of Aiken, Chief Cupp was a son of the late Charles W.
“Tippy” and Annie Mae Woodward Cupp, Jr. He graduated from Aiken High School. After high school he played professional baseball in the class D Georgia-Florida League. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy during the Korean War.
He joined the Aiken Fire Department as an auxiliary fireman in 1954 in what led to a 38 year career with the City of Aiken. He was Assistant Fire Chief from 1965 to 1977 when the Aiken Fire and Police Departments were combined as the Aiken Department of Public Safety. He remained as a major in the fire division until his retirement in 1992.
Chief Charlie was a member of Aiken Masonic Lodge for 60 years and American Legion Post 26 for 50 years. He was past president of the Fire Inspectors Association.
Chief Charlie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise Cook Cupp and his son, Charles W. “Chuck” Cupp, IV.
Visitation will be Monday morning, April 15th from 10 until 11 AM at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
A graveside service will follow at 11:30 AM in First Baptist Church of Montmorenci Cemetery with Richard Abney officiating.
Pallbearers will be Mike Hunt, Charles Barranco, Pete Fromer, David Turno, Ed Coward and Sam Huff. Honorary Pallbearers will be Richard Abney and Brunson Cromer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Montmorenci First Baptist Church, 44 Old Barnwell Rd., Aiken, SC 29803 or to American Legion Post 26 Baseball Fund, P.O. Box 977, Aiken, SC 29802.
