Charles Sessions

February 24, 1940 — January 5, 2022

Dr. Charles Edward Sessions, beloved husband of Nancy Jo Webb Sessions, died Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

     Dr. Sessions was born on February 24, 1940 in Fairfield, AL the son of the late Mary Earlene (Smith) and Harry Ellen Sessions. He was a 1958 Graduate of Fairfield High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science (1962) in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Alabama, a Master of Science (1964) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1970) both in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

     Over a 40 year career he worked as an engineer and then engineering manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN; Combustion Engineering, CT; Westinghouse Electric Tampa, FL; Westinghouse Electric Pittsburgh, PA; and Savannah River National Laboratory Aiken, SC until his retirement in 2004. A lifelong learner of history, math, and science, he taught the next generation through engineering courses at Pennsylvania State (New Kensington), University of South Carolina-Aiken, and Augusta Tech. He and Nancy enjoyed entertaining friends and family and even during his recent hospital stay he offered food/drink to the nurses caring for him.

     He is survived by his sons Keith Sessions (Stacie) of Spanish Fort, AL and Kevin Sessions (Jill) of Evans, GA; grandchildren Shelby, Logan, Eliza Jane, and Samuel Sessions; sister Mary Ellen Olson of New Albany, MS; and brother Don Sessions (Jane) of Bellevue, WA. He is preceded in death by his sister, Katherine Adele Sessions.

     His remains will be placed at Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum in Birmingham, AL at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local school, public or university library. Nothing made Charlie happier than going to a library or bookstore and learning something new.
