CLAIRE STEED NORTON, 87, beloved wife of Edwin Ray Norton, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, October 22, 2024, in her home.
Claire was born on November 30, 1936 to Eugene “Doc” Steed and Eunice Elma McClain Steed. A true native of Aiken County, Claire grew up in Old Ellenton, later living in Jackson and Aiken. In addition to a successful career at the Savannah River Plant, she had a passion for music, square dancing, and volunteerism. She left an impact on the community through her former service with Tri-Development Center of Aiken County, where she served on the board of directors as Secretary, and her previous leadership in the St. John's Methodist Church youth program.
Claire was predeceased by her parents, Eugene and Elma and son, Marc Wayne Norton. Surviving is her husband of 55 years, Edwin; two sons, Ensley Orden Adams, Michael Ray Norton (Leigh), all of Aiken; two granddaughters, Lauren Michelle Norton and Allison Norton Pebbles (Daniel); her sister, Priscilla Polson, of Jackson, SC and three nieces, Karen Bunch (Ronnie), Emily Stoffelen (Peter), and Tracy Sanford (Lennie).
The Memorial Service will be held Saturday morning, October 26th at 11 o’clock in St. John’s Methodist Church with The Revs. Dr. W. Timothy McClendon and Grayson “Butch” Blackwell officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at a reception in Ward Hall. Private inurnment will be in the church’s columbarium.
