AIKEN, SC - Clyde (CV) Vernon Bryant, age 91, died peacefully on September 15, 2018. The son of Oscar Lewis Bryant and Mattie Watkins Bryant, he was born November 11, 1926 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Kit) Johnston Bryant, sons Frederick Lewis Bryant (Mary Lea) and Christopher Watkins Bryant (Clara) and stepson, Douglas McKenzie; five grandchildren: John Frederick Bryant (Mary Kathryn), Laura Lea Bryant, and William Vernon Bryant (Courtney), Patricia Toy Bryant Dugger (Tim), Stuart Watkins Bryant, and two great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia Edna Brash Bryant, step daughter, Kim Howell and grandson, Christopher Johnson Bryant.
Clyde attended Duke University on football scholarship, playing tight end for the Blue Devils football team. His college years were interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer as World War II came to a close.
After graduating from Duke, Clyde joined IBM staying with the company throughout his 33 year career. After several moves with IBM he settled in Chattanooga, Tennessee serving as branch manager for the IBM office there for 15 years. While in Chattanooga, he was made a Deacon at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church and enjoyed membership in the Rotary Club. From Chattanooga, Clyde and wife Pat moved to Frankfurt, Germany where he worked as an IBM liaison to the U.S. Military in Europe for three years. They returned to the U.S. in early 1978 for medical treatment for Pat who died in May of that year.
After their marriage in 1980, Clyde and Kit lived in South Florida for several years until he retired from IBM. They then moved to Aiken, South Carolina, settling into Woodside Plantation where he served on the club’s Board of Directors. He loved Duke University, college and professional football, and his dogs.
A private service will be held.
