Darrel Douglas Walker, 76, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2024
Darrel was born December 3, 1947, in Bayreuth, Germany, the son of the late Lt. Col. Donald Douglas Walker and Betty Barnard Walker of Moraga, CA. He is survived by his sister, Anne Walker of Fairfield, CA, and his niece, Erin Anderson-Walker, of Mountain View, CA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Alice Olinghouse Walker, in August, 2024.
Dr. Walker graduated from Miramonte High School, Moraga, CA in 1966. He graduated from the University of California, Davis, in 1970 with a BS degree in Chemistry. He received an MS in chemistry from California State University , Sacramento, in 1974, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1980. He also served in the US Army from 1972-75 as a Lieutenant in the Ordinance Corps. He worked for 26 years at the Savannah River National Laboratory as a research chemist for E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Westinghouse Savannah River Company, retiring in 2006 as an Advisory Scientist. His research contributed to the design and operation of the Defense Waste Processing Facility and the Salt Waste Processing Facility.
In his retirement years, Doug continued to bicycle, travel, collect stamps, garden, canoe, and birdwatch. His interest in conservation of our natural resources led him to monitor water quality in the Savannah River and Edisto River basins, and to monitor bird and amphibian populations in South Carolina.
Dr. Walker’s services will be held privately.
