Doris Marie Carson

March 31, 1933 — September 21, 2021

AIKEN, SC – Doris  Marie Carson, 88, beloved wife of the late Gene Alan Carson, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at The Place at Pepper Hill.

A memorial service will be held at Saturday afternoon, September 25th at 2 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home with The Reverend Grayson “Butch” Blackwell officiating.

     Doris was born March 31, 1933, in Fairfax, Missouri, to Richard and Elva Harmes. Her father was a farmer and her mother assisted in managing the farm while raising her children and employed as assistant Post Master in their local town.

     Doris was an avid horse trainer and rider while growing up on the farm. After graduating from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Missouri, in 1951, she attended Cosmetology College in St. Joseph, Missouri. She married her high school sweetheart, Gene Alan Carson, on August 25, 1953. They had one son, Michael Alan Carson, born July 5, 1954. Her husband was in the U.S. Navy and Doris lived in various locations throughout the United States in support of his 26-year career. She was able to travel to numerous countries on her husband’s different assignments. She particularly liked Scotland and Spain. Although her travels were numerous, she was able to maintain her profession in cosmetology.

     She was an active member of various churches throughout her life. Prior to her health decline, she was an involved member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and supported various charities and organizations.

     She made friends easily and her interests included family, gardening, sewing, reading, and artistic painting.

     Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by her husband Gene, brother Harry Harmes, and nephew Jeffrey Moorehead. She is survived by her son Michael (Tamara) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister Mary Lou Moorehead (Jim) of Aiken, SC; sister-in-law Kaye Harmes of Rogersville, Missouri; grandchildren Christopher Carson, PhD, LTC, USAF (Anna); and Anastasia Frew (Ryan, deceased); great-grandchildren Quentin, Seamus, Layla, Aksel, Zara; and nieces Susan Fanning (Kenneth) and Holly Hill.

     Doris will rest eternally next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.

     In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mrs. Carson may be made to the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Aiken, SC or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
