AIKEN, SC – Mrs. Dorothy Compton Marks “Muff” Herbruck, 88, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018 after a long battle with cancer. In addition to her parents and her brother, Arthur, Muff was preceded in death by her husband, W. Gibbs “Bud” Herbruck.Born in Washington, DC, Muff was the daughter of the late Cdr. Arthur Duncan and Medora Compton Marks. Muff graduated Sweet Briar College in 1951. Muff and Bud lived in Canton, Ohio where they were members of the Canton Club and Brookside Country Club. Upon a return trip from Florida in 1979, they stopped in Aiken, SC, and fell in love with the town, its people, and its equestrian community. They spontaneously purchased a house and moved permanently to Aiken years later with their beloved dogs. Muff was a strong supporter of numerous organizations including Mount Vernon, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, the Aiken Land Conservancy, and the NationalReview.Muff is survived by her adopted children, Jefferson and Arthur Marks of Virginia Beach, VA and Tina Maria Marks of Mendham, NJ.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, P.O. Box 1702, Aiken, SC 29802 or to Children's Place, Inc., Attn: Patty Jimenez, 310 Barnwell Ave. NE, Aiken, SC 29801.A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, September 28, 2018 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with The Reverend Grant Wiseman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
