Aiken - Mr. Edward "Ted" Freer Girardeau, Sr., 86, passed away Monday, July 31, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Ted was born in Barnwell, SC, son of the late Edward Hamlin and Virginia Moseley Girardeau. He attended the University of South Carolina, was a member of the SAE fraternity, and played on the USC football team. As a resident of Aiken, Ted was a mortgage banker and also worked in real estate development. Ted was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee, was a member and past President of the Aiken Gamecock Club, was Chairman of the Gamecock Club Executive Committee, and was a member of the Old Towne Plantation Hunting Club. Ted was presented the Service to Mankind Award from the Aiken Sertoma Club in 1982.
He devoted much of his life to coaching in the city of Aiken Youth programs for baseball and football, coached American Legion Baseball, and was the last coach of the St. Angela Academy football team. His passion for coaching was passed on to his children who all coached youth sports in the City of Aiken. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Ted is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Lee Girardeau, daughter, Virginia Girardeau (the late Thomas Burn Smith) Smith, Aiken; sons, Edward “Ed” F. (Renee) Girardeau, Jr., Aiken, John L. (Nancy) Girardeau, Aiken, and Robert (Judi) Girardeau, Aiken; grandchildren, Edward “Tripp” Girardeau, III, Loring Girardeau, Lee Girardeau, Amanda (Russ) Girardeau Warfield, Ashlyn Girardeau, Regan Girardeau, Robert Girardeau, Jr., Matthew Smith, and Elizabeth Smith; and sister in law, Joan Girardeau.
In addition to his parents and son in law, Ted was preceded in death by a brother, Sheldon Girardeau.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, August 4, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Chris Erde officiating. A reception will follow at the church.
