Elizabeth Stokes Wallenburg Spruell was born, March 28, 1939 in Aiken, SC, to Walter Gustave Wallenburg and Edith Fleming Tarver Wallenburg. She graduated from USC, Columbia with a BA in English (because women were not permitted in the Engineering program at Clemson).
"Liz" married George M. Spruell in January of 1965. She gave birth to Hope in 1971 and Walker in 1974.
Liz loved being a teacher. She taught at Aiken Junior High, Aiken Day School, Paul Knox Middle, and finally, at Aiken High School. One of her biggest loves in life was to see the light of understanding go off in a student's eyes when they suddenly grasped how a math equation worked, and then learned how to do it on their own.
Liz loved her summers off from school! She spent them reading books in a rocking chair sitting lakeside in New Hampshire, and developing life-long bonds with people from around the world at Camp Winaukee where she and George lived and worked. In addition to watching Walker participate in activities at Winaukee, Liz enjoyed sailing, and taking photographs of campers at sports events, as well as tutoring campers who had trouble with math. She also loved a good crossword puzzle and cup of coffee with friends.
After retiring from teaching, Liz enjoyed time in New Hampshire at YMCA Camp Huckins with Hope. Through meeting various staff members at Huckins over the years, Liz saw the positive impact camp could have on girls' lives. She decided that Camp Huckins was an organization she wanted to support and encourage through her presence as well as her finances. As Winaukee had been her camp home in her early life, Huckins became her camp home in her later life.
Here are some of the things Liz Loved that you may not know: Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, the color blue, cats, Motown, playing guitar, rocks, arranging altar flowers at church (while Sunday service organ music was practiced), going on adventures with her kids, meteor showers, solar eclipses, ice cream, Pop Secret Homestyle popcorn, and March Madness basketball.
We will be celebrating Liz's life July 8, 2023, at 2:00 PM at St Thaddeus Episcopal Church with Fr. Joseph Whitehurst officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Stevenson-McClelland Building following the committal.
