EMMA JEAN LAYTON, 86, widow of Robert Earl (Bob) Layton, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2024 in Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
A native of Cincinnati, OH, Emma Jean was the daughter of the late Louis and Ethelene Pendygraft. She lived most of her life in Cincinnati where she graduated from Central Vocational High School. She worked for many years as an office manager for her husband’s painting company before going to work for the IRS. She and Robert moved to Ft. Meyers, FL in 1989 where she worked for the State of Florida and retired to Aiken in 2002, where they acquired their beloved Bishon Frisé, Windsor. Jean enjoyed interacting with her friends in Aiken through membership in numerous local social organizations. Surviving is her son, Mark Layton (Rose) of Aiken; her brother, Robert (Mary) Pendygraft of Blanchester OH. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Clinton and Clifford Pendygraft.
A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon, June 28th at 5 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home with The Rev. Virgil Parsons officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 7 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Aiken County Animal Shelter (fotasaiken.org).
