Aiken – Mr. Fred W. Langdon, Jr., 94, passed away Monday, October 8, 2018. Mr. Langdon was born in Bronx, NY, a son of the late Fred W. Langdon, Sr. and Sigrid Ruth Garner Langdon. He retired from Aiken Technical College, where he was one of the founders, brought in for his knowledge and background in the textile industry. Later, as Chairman of the Science and Technology Division, he created the Nursing Program at Aiken Tech. He began his career in product development with Milliken Textiles in New York City and came to South Carolina with Riegel Textile Corp. in Johnston, SC and later self-employment. He was active in the Republican Party. He served on the Aiken County Planning Commission and was involved in many aspects in the Aiken Community. During World War II, he was designated as a Naval Aviator and commissioned as an ensign at the age of nineteen. Based on Tinian, he flew PB 4Y-1 Liberators. He made 88 flights of which about 30 were active combat, missions in the northeast Pacific and covered the landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, five air medals and the victory medal. After the war, he continued to fly for the love of it and did so when in his eighties. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Ruth Langdon, Aiken, Kathy Langdon (Dr. Barbour S.) Warren, Trumansburg, NY, Nancy Elizabeth Langdon, Alpharetta, GA; granddaughter, Isabel Langdon Warren, New York, NY. Funeral services will be held privately in the Langdon Cemetery.
