Grace K. Jernberg

September 3, 1925 — August 14, 2021

AIKEN, SC – GRACE KATHRYN JERNBERG, 95, widow of August J. “Jack” Jernberg, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Trinity on Laurens.

Born in the Bronx, NY, on September 3, 1925. Grace was the only child of the late Edward McMahon and Thelma Webb McMahon Tiedeman.  She grew up in Queens-Astoria, New York. After graduation, the war was on, and she went to work for AT&T, handling air raid calls for all of NYC. She began corresponding with a US Army soldier from the Signal Corp in Holland, Belgium and Germany. When he returned home from the war to Indiana, Grace married Jack in Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Astoria, Long Island, on February 23, 1942. She and Jack lived in Pompton Lakes, NJ, where they raised their five daughters.  Jack worked with Ducane Heating, and they relocated their family to Aiken in 1968 when the Ducane plant moved to Barnwell County.  She was a devout Catholic and was a communicant at St. Mary Help of Christians Church and St. Gerard’s. She made many friends through her church community, and was also able to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Rome with Jack during their retirement.  She volunteered with USC Aiken’s SeniorNet Learning Center helping with the computer classes for seniors. She enjoyed her later years in life at Trinity on Laurens continuing her spiritual journey, visiting with friends and family and cheering for the Atlanta Braves.

Survivors include four daughters, Judy Renbarger (Jerry), Evans, GA, Kathy Jernberg, Rehoboth Beach, DE, Chris Helton (Andy Edwards), Aiken, Margaret Jernberg, North Augusta; a son-in-law, Roger Schlegel, Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Lisa Glass (Scott), Donna Johannesmeyer (Tom), Lindsey McIntire (Matt), Ryan Helton, Kelsey Beckner (Lucas) Anjie Rosete, Joni Renbarger; great-grandchildren, AJ Glass, Alex Glass, Andrew Glass, Ava Johannesmeyer, Caleb Johannesmeyer, Zoe Helton, Finley Kepes, and Rowan Grace McIntire, Regina Rosete, Alyssa Rosete, Alexis Rosete, Justice Sprout, and Siena Sprout.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Pat Schlegel and step-father, Luke Tiedeman.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated Friday morning, August 20th at 10 o’clock at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 138 Fairfield St., SE, with The Rev. Francisco Onate-Vargas, as Celebrant assisted by Brother Henry Fulmer.  Farewell prayers and commendation will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
