Harold Randall Bass

August 28, 1936 — August 25, 2022

Dr. Harold R. Bass, 85, of Aiken, SC passed into the arms of his Lord on August 25 surrounded by his family.

Hal Bass was born August 28, 1936 in Roodhouse, IL to Harold Aaron and Pauline Bass. He married his high school sweetheart, Marge Blaine, on June 24, 1961 in Wauconda, IL.

Dr. Bass graduated from Wauconda High School in Wauconda, IL, in 1954, and attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL graduating with a degree in Biology. After earning a medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, he served his medical internship in San Bernardino, CA. After serving two years in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps attached to the U.S. Marines at Da Nang, South Vietnam, as a combat surgeon he went on to complete his OB/GYN residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, CO.

In 1974, Hal moved his young family to Cheyenne, WY and began practicing with Drs. Dan Hinkle, Harry Crawford, and Robert McGuire. He also served as Chief of the OB/GYN department at Memorial Hospital.

In 1984, he moved his family to Albany, OR where he began a solo practice “Complete Women’s Care”. There Hal served as chairman of the OB/GYN department at Albany General Hospital and was the President of the Albany Physicians Group from 1986-1988.

New adventures called, and in 1988 Hal and his family moved to Massachusetts where he worked as the Medical Director for the Center of Women’s Health at Quincy Hospital, later serving as the Chief of the OB/GYN department for Braintree Medical Associates.

In 1993, he began the final chapter of his professional life when he moved up to Lowell, MA to work for Saints Memorial WomanHealth. It was there that Hal spent the balance of his career until his retirement in 2018. During these years he served as Associate Chief of the OB/GYN department at Saints Memorial Hospital and was a valuable mentor, colleague and friend to everyone with whom he crossed paths. During his 53-year career as a physician, Dr. Bass helped to bring nearly 8,000 souls into this world, and, in doing so, he touched countless lives as a result.

Upon his retirement from the practice of medicine in 2018, Hal and his wife Marge transitioned their lives and home to Aiken, SC to enjoy a more relaxed life with better weather, famous southern hospitality, and, of course, spending more time with their children and grandchildren.

Hal is survived by his wife, Marge Bass; children Eric (Tiffany) of St. Augustine, FL, and Heather (Stewart Shields) of Gardendale, AL; grandchildren Chloe, Sophie, and Cody; sibling Phil Bass of Glen Ellyn, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, and his oldest son Christopher Randall Bass.

Contributions in lieu of flowers and other tributes may be made in Dr. Bass’ name to the North Jefferson Women’s Center - Sav-A-Life, 1209 Decatur Hwy, Fultondale, AL 35068.

Services will be held privately at a later date.
