AIKEN, SC – HARRY E. HOOTMAN, 85, died Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at his residence.
Born on June 5, 1933 in Oak Park, IL, Harry was a son of the late Merle A. and Rachael Adkinson Hootman. He served in the U.S. Airforce and then attended Michigan Technological University, earning a BA in Chemistry and then a MS in Nuclear Engineering. He furthered his education with an LL.B.
In 1963 he married Linda Smith of Aiken, and together they had 3 children, David, Holly and John.
Harry worked as a researcher first at Argonne National Lab for 3 years, then continued as a nuclear engineer / consultant at the Savannah River Plant for 33 more years. He then attended the University of South Carolina, earning a Ph.D. in Literature and became a Professor of English at USC-Aiken.
He was a member of Sigma XI, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the American Nuclear Society, the American Physics Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
Harry is survived by his wife, three children and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Saturday morning, December 22nd at 11 o’clock at Aiken Memorial Gardens with The Rev. Dr. Henry L. Chennault officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
