Janelle S. Pope

AIKEN, SC - Mrs. Janelle Pope passed peacefully into eternity early yesterday morning at her home near New Ellenton. She was eighty seven. Originally from Rhodhiss, NC, Mrs. Pope was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Collie and Zeppy Agnes Short, her husband, Raymond Pope, originally from Hickory NC, several older brothers and sisters from the Hickory and Granite Falls (NC) area, and a grandson, Micah Hook of New Ellenton. She is survived by her youngest brother, Bill Short (Wilma Dean) of Hildebran, NC, nieces and nephews in Delaware, NC, SC, and Georgia, her daughter Wendy P. Bryant of Aiken, son Mark Pope (Karin) of New Ellenton, grandchildren Casey Hook (Courtney), Erica Hook (Shawn McNeill), Ken Pope (Courtney), Robert Pope, and great grandchildren Chloe Hook, Carolina Hook, and Makiah Pope. Having originally relocated from North Carolina in 1951, Mrs. Pope and her husband Raymond settled in the New Ellenton area in 1956. She was from that time an active member for Foreman Memorial Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and served as church secretary for many years. Her greatest pleasures were singing, traveling, and enjoying her grand and great grandchildren. In the spring of 2013, Mrs. Pope was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, which steadily eroded her mental and physical abilities until continual care was needed. In particular, her family wishes to thank Mrs. Karla Roberts, Mrs. Norma Raper, and the Home Health and Kindred Hospice professionals whose friendship, devotion, and attentiveness made it possible for Mrs. Pope to remain at home until the end of her journey among us. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, January 20th beginning at 1 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 2 o’clock with The Rev. William Eaves officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Casey Hook, Erica Hook, Ken Pope, Robert Pope, Dennis Adams and Brian Adams.
