Janet Merriam Weaver

MT. PLEASANT, SC - Janet Merriam Weaver, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, SC and formerly of Aiken, widow of the late Robert Kenneth Weaver, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 10, 2017. Janet was born February 25, 1924 in Belmont, MA to Clarence Edgar Smith and Janet Tenney Smith. Janet was raised in Lexington, MA, active in sports including captain of the girls’ high school field hockey team, graduated from the Cambridge School of Nursing, worked as a surgical nurse, and met the love of her life on a blind date at the Kite and Key Room in the Ben Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia. This started a love affair that resulted in 59 years of wedded bliss.Words cannot describe the magnitude of Janet's selfless love for her husband and her children. Her volunteer efforts included Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA Halloween Carnival, Presbyterian Women, Aiken Caring Together Sharing (ACTS), First Presbyterian Church chancel choir, and vacation bible school. Janet and Bob were active members of First Presbyterian Church for over 55 years. She is survived by her brother Austin T. Smith (Jean) and her four children Dr. Kenneth A. Weaver (Katherine), Dr. David R. Weaver (Rachel), Barbara M. McCarthy, and Dr. Robert C. Weaver (Kitty). Survivors also include twelve grandchildren Merriam Kindle (Dustin), Dr. Andrew Weaver, Dr. Katie Weaver, Janet Weaver, Emma Kroll (Phil), Caroline Weaver, Alec Weaver, Dr. John McCarthy (Emily), Rev. Jim McCarthy (Jordan), Julianne Diehl (David), Katy Weaver, and Nancy Weaver and five great-grandchildren, Jayne McCarthy, Joy McCarthy, Ellie McCarthy, Julia McCarthy, and Locke McCarthy. Janet was preceded in death by her two sisters Georgia Smith and Carolyn Burke (Robert) of Lexington, MA. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am followed by the funeral service at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Ave. SW on Monday, November 13. Reverend Jim McCarthy will officiate. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Aiken Partnership, designating the Robert K. and Janet M. Weaver Science Endowed Scholarship at the University of South Carolina Aiken, 471 University Parkway, Aiken, SC 29801.
