AIKEN, SC – JOE HANNER LOOKABILL, 94, died Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Anchor Health and Rehab.
A native of Southmont, NC, Joe was a son of the late Lloyd E. and Clara Sue Hanner Lookabill, Sr. A true representative of the Greatest Generation, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Fire Controlman 2nd Class, aboard the USS Milwaukee and USS Marble Head. He retired as a salesman for automotive paint and body supplies. Joe was a former member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Ridge, MD and the South River Yacht Club in Edgewater, MD. He moved to Aiken in 2004 and was an active member of South Aiken Presbyterian Church. Joe had a lifelong love for the water, and most enjoyed his time on and around boats, crabbing docks, and shorelines when surrounded by his family and friends. Joe was admired for his easy-going and resilient nature, sharp wit, and fierce independence. He was deeply devoted to, and beloved by, his large family and network of friends.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Lee Spriggs Lookabill; his son, Thomas D. Lookabill, Sr.; two grandchildren, Rebecca Sue and Daniel Lee; two sisters, Mary Ellen Fishel and Clara Sue Carter.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Masters Lookabill; “daughter-in-law”, Vickie Lookabill Schmidt (George), all of Aiken; five grandchildren, Glenn Lookabill (Jenny), Brian Lookabill, Sarah Lookabill Scott (Mathew), Thomas Lookabill, Jr., Joseph Lookabill; eight great-grandchildren, Hunter, Sierra, Cole, Jack, Thomas, Mary Alex, Carter, and Mathew.; three step – daughters, Paula DeWeese (Dewey), Jeana Matthews (Richard), Marcia Goodwyn (Al); seven step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd E. Lookabill, Jr., Murphy, NC, John D. Lookabill (Judy), North Charleston, SC.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, May 6th from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be Monday morning, May 7th at 11 o’clock at South Aiken Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Erin Morgan officiating. Private interment will be in Bethany Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to South Aiken Presbyterian Church.
