Joey Messick

Joey Messick, 39, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of December 22, 2023 following an eighteen months journey with Glioblastoma. During which time, Joey was never negative or complained; his saying was “it is what it is”.  Joey was the much loved son of Joe Messick and Debbie Byrd.

Joey is survived by brothers, Russ Messick (Sheri) of Lexington, SC and brother Cliff Dyches (Heidi) of North Augusta, SC and their children Alice and CJ.  Joey is survived by sisters Traci Messick (Michael) of Powhatan, Va, her children Britney, Tanner and Hunter Ritt and her grandchildren Brycen, Liam, and Kaysen.  Also sister, Gina Bollig (Kevin) of Aiken and her son Wesley Lowry.

He is preceded in death by grandparents Ruth and Russell Messick and Nick Buchanan. He is survived by grandmother Ruby Buchanan, Aiken, SC.

He is also survived by cousin Courtney Mills (John) and son Tripp of Pearland, TX.  Joey and Courtney have always been more like siblings than cousins and love each other greatly! He is also survived by numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

Joey had a passion for most any outdoor activity. He loved creating a garden, camping and hiking particularly in the Smokies and the midwestern and west coast states. He also loved the freedom and adventure of outdoor concerts. He traveled great distances to experience these things even alone if no one was available to join him.

Joey spent several years living in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant and in September 2019, he moved to Maine. He loved it there and thrived so much through his work, his friends and the area itself. He was so truly happy!  Joey also had a love for new and unique foods and creative dishes so going to Portland and also eating his roommate Joey’s cooking was greatly enjoyed.  His roommate Joey is a culinary school graduate.

Joey is loved and will be missed tremendously by so many.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, January 6^th beginning at 1 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.  A memorial service will follow at 2 o’clock with The Rev. Dr. W. Timothy McClendon officiating.
