AIKEN, SC - Col. John Hampton (Jack) Alley went to be with his Lord and Saviour on January 7th, 2019. He was born December 9th, 1929 in Sylva, NC and raised in Waynesville, NC. He attended Oak Ridge Military Institute and then N.C. State University where he earned a B.S. degree in chemical engineering. Later, he received an M.S. in business management from Webster University and also completed the Army/Air War College. Jack was recruited both by the Air Force and duPont at NC State, and maintained a dual career for life. Prior to deployment to the 4th Communications Squadron of the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing at Kimpo Air Base in Korea, he was stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS where he met and married Jon Doris Cole of Collins, MS. After Korea, he remained in the Air Force Reserves during his initial 23 years with duPont at the Savannah River Plant – earning the rank of Colonel as Commander of the 34th Maintenance Squadron at Warner Robbins AFB, Georgia. He completed his Air Force career with a four-year active duty tour at Military Airlift Command Headquarters at Scott AFB, Illinois in 1975. He returned to Savannah River Site in 1979 and remained until his retirement in 1992. Jack was active in the Aiken East camp of Gideons International. He and Jon were active members of St John’s United Methodist Church in Aiken before retirement. They spent their remaining years together at their mountain home in Burnsville, NC and were active in Mars Hill United Methodist Church and the Yancey County Gideons Chapter. Following his beloved wife’s passing in 2017, Jack returned to Aiken, to St. John’s, and to the Aiken East Gideon Camp in 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents Doyle Davis Alley and Edith Purcell Alley; sister Corinne Alley Withers; brother Zebulon Doyle Alley; son John Hampton Alley, Jr.; and wife Jon Doris Cole Alley. He is survived by his brother Charles Purcell Alley and wife Kathy; his daughter Patricia Alley Carlisle and husband Charles Michael Carlisle; sons Stephen Cole Alley and Jose Albino Garcia; grandson David Michael Carlisle and wife Alexis; grandson Stephen Daniel Carlisle; great granddaughter Corinne Teresa Carlisle and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Shellhouse Funeral Home on Hayne Ave. in Aiken from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2018. Burial will be Saturday, January 12th at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery. The Memorial Service with Military Honors will begin at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church with reception to follow.
