AIKEN, SC - Mr. John Thomas "Tom" McRee, 84, beloved husband of Janice McRee, passed away Friday, November 24, 2023.
Tom was born and raised in Tampa, Florida surrounded by an abundance of family. He attended Sewanee Military Academy and graduated from Hillsborough High School and later Austin Peay University. Tom served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. An artist at heart, he shared his gifts as an Art teacher in public schools before working at and retiring from SRS.
Tom never met a stranger. A meal shared with family always brought him the greatest joy. He would give just about anyone the shirt off his back, almost to a fault. If you asked him what he wanted in his final years, it was always peace and time with family. Tom left this world ready for the youthful body he once knew, with the love of his family and a handsome full head of hair.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice; daughter, Michelle (Michael) Shook; son, Damon McRee; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, John Wilson McRee and Anna Casalins McRee.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, December 4, 2023 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with The Rev. Dr. Marshall Jolly and The Rev. Joseph Whitehurst officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Following the interment, the family will receive friends in the Stevenson-McClelland Building.
