AIKEN, SC - John Hershel Meadows, 53, of Aiken died on Tuesday, April the 11th, at home of complications from cancer. The son of Jean and the late Maurice Meadows, he was born April 16, 1963, at Aiken County Hospital. He was a graduate of Aiken High School and the University of South Carolina, and worked as an electrical engineer with SCE&G for 32 years, in Charleston, Columbia, and Aiken. He was a devoted father and husband, loving son, talented musician, and diligent athlete. He was an all-state trumpeter in high school and performed with the Carolina Band for six years. For better or worse, he was a devoted fan of Gamecock sports. He competed in Aiken as a tennis player and ran dozens of marathons in Southeast and mid-Atlantic regions. He was active for 14 years in local youth swimming leagues and was an administrator and official for the Aiken-Augusta and CSRA swim leagues. He was Region III director of the South Carolina Swim Officials Association and, in 2016, he was named Swimming & Diving Official of the Year for South Carolina by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Officials Association. John was passionate about his work with the Fred Lamback Disability Meet. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jessica Royall Meadows, daughters Abby and Gracie, and his mother, all of Aiken. The family would like to thank Mike and Renata with encompass Hospice. Their kindness and compassion was a great comfort. The family will receive visitors Thursday evening, April 13th from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funera. The funeral will be at South Aiken Presbyterian Church, 1711 Whiskey Rd., where he was an elder, Friday morning, April 14th at 11 o’clock. The Rev. Dr. Christopher Crotwell will preside.
