He served in the US Army and was retired from AmeriSteel. John loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the guitar. He was an avid USC Gamecocks football and Atlanta Braves baseball fan. He had a strong faith in God, and served as a deacon at Talatha Baptist Church.
John was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Carrie; his parents Horace and Julia Smalley; and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his children: Danny Smalley (Sheila), Debra Bookstaver (Paul), Cindy Abshire (Robert), and Wayne Smalley (Tom Treat). His grandchildren include: Matthew Smalley (Brandy), Stephen Smalley (Adri), and Megan Gmerek (David); Brandon Bookstaver (Nicole) and Becky Bookstaver; and Robert Abshire III and Lizzie Abshire. His great grandchildren are: Preston Smalley, Lillian Smalley, Kyle Smalley, Mason Smalley, Hudson Gmerek, Aaron Bookstaver, and Maddie Bookstaver. He is also survived by two sisters, Anne Doolittle of Edgefield, SC and Sarah Milford of Augusta, GA and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 24 at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jordan Bird of Talatha Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm on Monday, September 24 at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Talatha Baptist Church or to Veterans' Victory House in Walterboro, SC.
