AIKEN, SC - Commander Joseph Carl Shields, (US Navy Ret.), 87, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2024.
He was born October 18, 1937 in Hannibal, MO to the late Joseph and Mary Shields. Joe is survived by the love of his life, and wife of 46 years, Gail Shields, and his children; Lisa Cox, Wendy Hilliard, Carla DeLa Bruere, Andrea Goryl and Michael McClung. He is also survived by his brother Robert Shields; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Joe joined the Navy at age 18 and through his career, attained the rank of Commander in Nuclear Power Submarine Service. Upon retirement, Joe and Gail decided to find a small town to spend the rest of their lives. He was very active in the community. Joe served in several capacities in the Rotary Club. He loved Palmetto Golf Club including sitting on the “porch.” He was a faithful member at Aiken First Baptist Church and particularly enjoyed 20 years in the Faith Explorers Sunday School class. His most cherished close friends came from this wonderful congregation who loved and supported his walk with the Lord.
