Laura Sue Rothwell

AIKEN, SC – LAURA SUE ROTHWELL, 89, widow of Donald L. Rothwell, passed away Monday, May 17, 2021 following a sudden illness.

A native of Tiptonville, TN, Laura was a daughter of the late Mary Agnes Page MIngle and Charlie Hill, Jr.   Laura was very proud that she had the opportunity as a young girl to sing and play harmonica with Carl Perkins on the radio in Tennessee.   She and Donald moved to Aiken in 1970.  She was a former real estate agent and worked with her daughter and son-in-law at Aiken Swimming Pool Company. She was a former volunteer with the Aiken Hospital Auxiliary at the old hospital on Richland Avenue.  Known by many as “Mama Laura”, she was fun loving, full of life and grace.  She loved people and loved to dance.  Laura was loved by all who knew her and came in contact with her intoxicating smile.  She was incredibly generous and would always find a way to help those in need.  No matter your darkest day, she always found a way to put a smile on your face. She loved life and touched so many hearts.

Surviving are her five children, Kathi Hines (Ronnie), Aiken, Donald C. Rothwell (Diane), Charlotte, NC, Kim Rothwell, Aiken, Timothy E. Rothwell (Pamela Rae), Charleston, SC, Steven R. Rothwell (Julie), Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Jerrime Rothwell, Jonathan Rothwell, D.J. Rothwell (Missy), Rachel Rothwell, Tarrah Rothwell, Donald Rothwell, Danielle Rothwell (Chase), Timothy Rothwell II, Billy Hines (Christy), Frank Hines (Alexis); great-grandchildren, Connor Rothwell, Kinley Rothwell, Layla Rothwell, Xzaviar Rothwell, Cara Hines, Ellis Hines, Nora Rothwell, Alyssa Hines, Harrison Hines.

In addition to her husband and parents, Laura was preceded in death by a son, John Randal Rothwell; sister, Emma Kathryn Holton; brother, Buddy Mac Hill.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon beginning at noon at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 1 o’clock in the funeral home chapel.  Interment will be in Southlawn Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
