AIKEN, SC – Margaret C. Ashhurst, 98, entered eternal rest on December 23, 2020 at her home in Aiken following a brief illness.
Margaret was born in New York and grew up on Lake Ronkonkoma on Long Island. She married Samuel Kilgour and had two children, Douglas and Jane. After Sam’s death, she met and married Frederick Ashhurst. The family moved to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands in 1959. Upon retirement in 1982, Margaret and Fred moved to Ridge Spring, SC and then to Aiken in 2002.
Margaret was a devout Lutheran and joined Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Johnston and later St. James Lutheran Church in Graniteville. Margaret was a member of the Ridge Spring Choral Society and performed with them at Carnegie Hall. She was a member of the American Legion Aux Unit 26 in Aiken. She loved the beach, swimming, cooking, baking, art, needlework and puzzles.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane Kilgour; grandchildren, Samantha (Jeff) Hollack, Douglas (Olivia) Kilgour; great-granddaughter, Eleanor; nieces, Jane Feher, Susan Feher, Ann Ritger, Charlene Parrish and a nephew, Richard (Taryn) Sandmann.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fred; son, Douglas Kilgour; brother, Alexander and a sister Pauline.
Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in historic Bethany Cemetery with Pastor Linda Anderson officiating. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
