Aiken, SC - It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mary Pauline Gassett Gardner, 92, of Aiken, SC announce her passing on Friday, May 20, 2022. Mary passed away peacefully in her home. She was born March 8, 1930 to Otis Woodfin and Violet Josephine Hurst Gassett (deceased) in Meigs, GA. Mary is survived by her children, James "Jimmy" Jr and Robert Gardner (Deborah), grandchildren Victoria Gates (Aaron), Robert W. Gardner II, and Margaret Gardner. Mary also leaves behind her sisters, Barbara Gassett Wilson, Boston, GA, Patsy Ann Gassett Clark, McComb, MS and sister-in-law Irma Gassett, Meigs, GA. Mary was predeceased by husband, James "Jim" Whitfield Gardner and her youngest son, William "Billy" Ross Gardner, brother, Alton Henry Gassett, Meigs, GA and sister Francis Irene Gassett Idol, Maynardville, TN.
After graduating from Meigs High School, Mary attended Columbia Baptist Medical College in Columbia, SC where she earned her nursing degree. Upon graduation, Mary married Jim and started their family in the CSRA. Mary and Jim settled in Aiken in 1951. They both worked for DuPont at Savannah River Site until well into the early 90's when they both "retired" to take on the role of grandparents in 1992. From family beach vacations, car pick up lines, back to school shopping and supporting extracurricular activities, Mary was a devoted and beloved GG to her grands and a devoted mother and a selfless supporter of her son's endeavors. Mary's love for gardening was apparent to everyone that knew her. She had the ability to make ugly sticks flourish into budding trees and took much pride in her flower beds. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A memorial service will be held June 11, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. John's United Methodist Church in Aiken, SC followed by a celebration reception with friends and family.
