Aiken – Mrs. Mattie Elizabeth Brown King, 93, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2022. Mrs. King was born in Brookville, MD on Feb. 17, 1929, daughter of the late Guy Leroy and Lillie Margaret Hett Brown. As a resident of Baltimore, MD, Mattie met Leslie Ernest King Jr., and they married on August 17, 1950. Mattie worked as the head teller for 10 years at a local bank, and then at Social Security Admimistration where she served as the first female president of the SSA Federal Credit Union. She retired in 1990 with over 30 years of service. Mattie and Les moved to Aiken SC in 1993. As a resident of Aiken, she was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church, where she was very active with Wednesday night suppers and planning trips with Spence Overton. Her greatest pleasure was providing her famous choclate chip cookies at every event. Mattie loved her St. John’s Sunday School class like family. She was always seen around the church with her best friend and Sister in Christ Zenith Sharpe. After the passing of her husband Les in 2017, Mattie relocated to Cumberland Village. She is survived by her sons: Alan (Dora) King, Land O'Lakes, FL., and Stephen (Donna) King, Clemson, SC; grandchildren: Christopher King, Jessica Bullard, and Stephanie Oprea; great-grandchildren: Kristina King, Saniya King, Alana King, Finn Oprea, Ryder Oprea, Jude Oprea, Keira Bullard, and Kyle Bullard. Also survived by her sister Naomi Ward, and proceeded in death by her sisters Amelia Servary and Cedelle Barrett. A private, family only service was held at the St. Johns United Methodist Church where she was interred next to Les in the Columbarium.
