Antonio Maximiliano Duarte, fondly known to family and friends as Max, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025, in Aiken, SC, at the age of 91. Born on October 14, 1933, in Mexico City, Mexico, Max lived a vibrant and accomplished life filled with passion, perseverance, and love.
Max is survived by his devoted wife of over 40 years, Valerie Duarte; his son, Max (Amy) Duarte and daughters: Linda (Rob) Glickman, Susana Duarte, and Victoria (Doug) Hollidge from his first marriage to Linda Britton and his stepchildren with Valerie: Warren, and Rod Schmelzer, Jill Rabne, and Rachel (David) Lerner. He is also lovingly remembered by his nine grandchildren: Olivia, Aidan, Wells, Carly, Susie, Sofia, Eva, Max and Charlotte, and 4 step grandchildren Joy, Jackson, Brielle and Raya.
A man of many talents and boundless energy, Max was a celebrated international race car driver; known as the "Amo de las Carreras," his crowning achievement came in 1967 when he was named Mexican National Champion.
Max earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, propelling him into a distinguished corporate career. He held key positions at Monsanto, Federal Mogul, Vinos Vergel, and Sherwin-Williams, earning respect for his sharp intellect and unwavering determination.
Max will be fondly remembered for his infectious laughter, his sharp wit, and his steel will. A loyal fan of Notre Dame, his spirited "Go Irish!"—delivered in his unmistakable Mexican accent—brought joy to countless game days.
A service to commemorate Max’s remarkable life will be held at Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home on January 25th at 11:00 am. Reception at Adath Yeshurun Synagogue will be held immediately following the service.
