Michael Wayne Mitchell

Micheal Wayne Mitchell, 70, a retired teacher, resident and native of Aiken, SC, died of natural causes on January 17th, 2022. Mike is survived by his Aunt, Stella Woodward, his brother, Hal McGinnis; his sister-in-law, Lisa McGinnis and his niece, Natalie McGinnis as well as a large number of cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his partner Steve Wimberly. Mike was born in Aiken on November 12th, 1951 to Sarah Ann Canady McGinnis (nee Mitchell) and John Wayman Mitchell, both now deceased. Mike tirelessly and lovingly dedicated his entire career to helping children and adolescents. After completing a BA in Psychology at the University of South Carolina he worked as a Clinical Counselor at Blanding in Columbia, SC for a number of years. He then went back to college to complete his teaching certificate whereupon he returned to Blanding to continue his work as a teacher. Mike was the perfect southern gentleman to his neighbors and friends despite the fact that he battled crippling clinical depression for most of his adult life. Mike leaves behind many who cared deeply for him, but few who truly understood his personal demons. Mike's ashes will be spread at Mt Beulah Baptist Church on a date to be determined.
