AIKEN, SC - The Reverend Thurmond O’Neil Flowers, 70, husband of Patsy McMichael Flowers passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.
Neil was born in Lake City, SC and was the son of the late Joe and Dorothy Flowers. Neil grew up in Aiken, graduated from Aiken High School in 1967, Augusta Tech in 1969 and was co-owner of a family business, Flowers Paint and Body Shop. Neil later became the full-time Youth Director at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Aiken and after many years in that position was called into full-time parish ministry with the United Methodist Church. After studies with Duke University Theological Seminary, Neil served churches in the South Carolina United Methodist Conference, Orangeburg District. Neil was presently serving as pastor at Lebanon United Methodist Church, Neeses, and St. John’s United Methodist Church, Norway. Neil was active in many areas of community life in Aiken having coached pee wee football, served on the Area One Advisory Board with the Aiken County School District, Relay For Life, Aiken High Booster Club, just to name a few. Through his ministry, he was involved with Give Kids the World and the Salkehatchie Summer Service program. His heart was for children and youth.
In addition to his wife, Neil is survived by his son Christopher Scott Flowers, daughter-in-law Summer Muzika Flowers, grandson Bennett O’Neil Flowers, granddaughter Carly Ann Flowers, sisters Genelle F. Eadie and Jean F. Bradshaw, brother Ronald E. Flowers (Donna), brother-in-law John C. McMichael (Nancy), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends. He was preceded in death by brother Jerry Flowers.
A celebration of Neil’s life will be Saturday, April 13 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Aiken, S.C. at 2:00 PM. A visitation will follow in the St. John’s gymnasium.
