Patricia “Patti” Grace Newman, 86, received her heavenly reward on August 22, 2024. Born in Terra Alta, West Virginia. She grew up outside of Clarksburg, West Virgina. She was the oldest child of the late Mary and Wesley Devericks. She graduated from Bristol High School (Allstate Choir) in 1955 and won a scholarship to college; however, the money was not available to support her room and board. After high school, she began working and helped with expenses for her family. She captured the heart of Jerry O. Newman. They were married in 1958. Jerry and Patti had 4 daughters. They moved to Greenbelt, MD where Patti earned her Cosmetology license from Vidal Sassoon. This was useful with 4 daughters. At the age of 3, their oldest daughter had a medical emergency and suffered brain damage. Patti and Jerry worked to give her the best possible education to help her have successes in life. They moved to South Carolina. With every obstacle met by her daughters, Patti sought out the support whether medical, educational or other, and moved those obstacles for her daughters. She began a career working at the Post Office saving/paying for her daughters’ educations because she valued it. Her dream was realized with 3 of her daughters graduating from Engineering programs at Clemson. She retired from the post office to care for Jerry when his health began declining. They left the home that he had built her on 13 acres in Central, SC, and moved to Aiken, SC. She was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of Aiken Newcomers for many years and worked at the visitor’s center. During that time, she continued supporting her oldest daughter and Aiken’s Tri-Development Program.
Throughout the years, the family would spend time traveling around the US, across the globe, and to that special place they had grown-up to visit family. During drives to pass the time, they would sing. Patti and Jerry treasured family and time with family. Patti wanted to travel saving pennies and change for years to go to Hawaii. Patti took her girls hiking growing up only getting lost once in the Rocky Mountains. She grew a love of nature, exercise, shopping, and travel in her daughters. Some of the more epic moments were Patti and the girls annual Black Friday Shopping adventures, and trips to New York.
In addition to her parents, husband and in-laws, she was preceded in death by sister Linda and her husband Jim Davis; and brothers Johnny, Danny, Ronny, and Larry Devericks. Those left to cherish her memory include: her children, Tamrah Newman, Rachelle (Steve) Mason, Symantha (Timothy) Aydt and Onika Kerber; her grandchildren, Caroline (Ernesto) Baron, Jacob (Samantha) Mason, Jack (Audrey) Kerber, Julia (Tyler) Brock, Luke Kerber, Abaigeal Aydt, Penelope Kerber, Maria Aydt, Scarlet Kerber, and Adeline Kerber; and great-grandchild, Elias Baron. Other surviving family members are: her sisters, Nancy (Delbert) Ready, and Lorraine Devericks; her in-laws, Shila Childers, and Lyle (Carol) Newman; cousins; nieces; and nephews.
