Paul David Smith, 86, beloved husband of Martha MacDonald Smith, passed away Friday, June 16, 2023 at Piedmont Augusta Hospital.
     A native of Omaha, NE, Paul was the oldest son of the late James Posley and Dorothy Faye Rosicky Smith. In 1959 he graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE, with high distinction, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He remained a loyal Cornhusker Football fan for life. In 1961 he received his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA via a full fellowship.
     His career, focused on the technology and computer industries, took him all over the world, including a three year stint on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, where he worked on a project for MIT Lincoln Labs in the mid-1960s.
     Mr. Smith is listed on many patents, primarily in the field of computer peripherals.
     He has also been featured in the books "Who's Who in Technology" and "Who's Who in American Executives".
     Mr. Smith was an Eagle Scout and had a wide range of hobbies and passions, including astronomy, owning and driving unique cars (including a 1959 DeSoto, 1963 Corvette and 1964 Studebaker Avanti), boating, fishing, and camping. He also loved the beach and spending time with his 3 granddaughters.
     In addition to his wife Martha of 58 years, Mr. Smith is survived by his 3 children, Kara Lifka & her husband, Lance, of Aiken, SC; Samantha Smith & her husband, Blake, of Lantana, FL; and Todd Smith & his wife, Susan, of Pittsburgh, PA; as well as his three granddaughters, Sydney (Hinesville, GA), Ellie (Delray Beach, FL) and Audrey (Lantana, FL); and niece Jamie Dieckhoff (Orfordville, WI). He is predeceased by his only brother James Smith (South Dennis, MA).
     No service scheduled and no service to be held.
     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
