The Reverend Robert Beaty Clyburn, 83, husband of Mary Anne Griffin Clyburn of Aiken, SC, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019. He sustained a severe head injury in a fall while celebrating his 62nd wedding anniversary on a Mississippi riverboat cruise. Born in Lancaster, SC on September 11, 1935, Bob was the son of David and Loula Boyd Clyburn. The son of a Methodist minister, Bob grew up in many churches throughout South Carolina. He graduated from The High School of Charleston in 1953, received a B.A. in Psychology from Wofford College in 1957, and a Masters of Divinity from Emory University in 1960. Bob and Mary Anne were married in Coral Gables, Florida in March 1957. In his legacy are three beloved children: Louanne Craft (Steve) of Blythewood SC, Robbie Clyburn (Pam) of Cartersville GA, and Melanie Jefferies (Ned) of Raleigh NC. He also leaves to cherish his memory six grandchildren: Alex and Meghan Craft, RB and Alexandria Clyburn, and Shain and Griffin Jefferies. Also surviving are siblings David Clyburn of Inman, SC, Elizabeth Minus of Asheville, NC and Mary Ben Faust of Mayville, WS. Bob was preceded in death by his father and mother, David and Loula Boyd Clyburn, and nephew David Faust. Forever known as Bobby to Mary Anne and those with whom he grew up, Daddy to his children, and Bobbo to his grandchildren, his family remembers a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. Bob made countless friends with ease both at home and in his travels. His calm, patient, and warm nature served him well for a life in the ministry, as his ministry served all with Bob in their lives. Bob was a United Methodist Minister in the South Carolina United Methodist Conference until he retired in 2001. He served the following United Methodist churches in his ministry: Belin/Murrel’s Inlet; New Zion, Shiloh and Alcolu in Clarendon County; Van Wyck/Van Wyck. While at Van Wyck he was the Church Planter for the Church of the Good Shepherd/Lancaster. He served Charles Wesley/ Aiken, Windsor/Columbia, Johnston and Harmony/ Johnston; Herbert Memorial and Sampit/Georgetown; Epworth/James Island; Barnwell and Siloam/ Barnwell. He served on the SC Methodist Conference District Board of Missions and Board of Ordained Ministry for many years. Bob was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher, a Stephen Minister, and a member of the choir. He attended Aiken Senior Men, was a past member of the Aiken Choral Society, and was formerly active in various theatrical productions of The Heart Board, The Diabetes Society, and Aiken Community Playhouse. A celebration of his life is scheduled for April 6th at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Aiken, SC, at 1:00. A visitation will follow in the St. John’s gymnasium. The Rev. Dr. John Stapleton and the Rev. David Clyburn will officiate the ceremony.
