AIKEN, SC – Robert Eugene (Bob) Butterbaugh, 92, beloved husband of Helen Louise (Barick) Butterbaugh, passed away peacefully at the Harbor Chase of Aiken, on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at approximately 7:55 AM after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Lucas, Ohio, Bob was the eldest of 5 children of the late Glenn and Dorothy Butterbaugh and is survived by his dear wife with whom he celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 5, 2018 at their home in Aiken.
Bob was a devoted and loving husband and father, dedicated to living for Jesus. His life verse was Matthew 6:33 – “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you”. His life was devoted to his faith, raising his family to love God. He served faithfully in leadership roles in his church in Mansfield, Ohio and Aiken, South Carolina.
Bob was valedictorian of his high school class in Lucas, Ohio. One day after graduation he was called to serve in the Navy in WWII. While on his voyage to the Pacific front, he met and became best friends with Glenn Barick, who in turn introduced him to his sister Helen, who became his bride and life-long partner.
In his spare time, besides his daily time reading the Bible, he enjoyed working on the farm, putting in some long days in addition to his employment at Therm-O-Disc in Mansfield. When Bob transferred to Emerson in Aiken, he quickly became an active member at Grace Church and continued to serve along with Helen in the Child Evangelism Fellowship ministry.
Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn (Butterbaugh) Atwell and Carl Butterbaugh and his grandson Brian Shamel. Survivors, in addition to his wife Helen, include his two sisters Betty (Butterbaugh) Byers and Vicky (Butterbaugh) Beal; three sons, James Butterbaugh, John Butterbaugh and Robert Butterbaugh; two daughters Shirley (Butterbaugh) Shamel and Linda Butterbaugh; 7 living grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Road, Aiken, SC 29803 on Friday, 8/30/2019 from 6-8 PM.
The funeral will be held at the Grace Church at 144 Talatha Church Rd., Aiken, SC on Saturday, 8/31/2019 at 10 AM
After the funeral a procession will be made to Southlawn Cemetery at 4524 Whiskey Road, Aiken, SC 29803 for the Gravesite Memorial.
