NEW ELLENTON, SC – ROBERT CHARLES KIRBY, 90, beloved husband of Thelma Dalton Kirby, passed away Friday, September 11, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Gaffney, SC, Robert was a son of the late Elbert Boone and Clara Turner Kirby. He proudly served his country in the United States Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He moved to New Ellenton in 1954 and began his career with DuPont at the Savannah River Site. He retired from DuPont as a supervisor in the E & I Department. Robert was a member of Corinth Baptist Church where he was a deacon and trustee. He was a member of the New Ellenton Masonic Lodge.
Survivors, in addition to Thelma, his wife of 65 years, are his daughter, Teri Kirby, Gilbert, SC; two sons, Barry Kirby (Lisa), Gilbert, SC, Jerry Kirby (Kelly), Jefferson, SC; four grandchildren, Benjamin Kirby (Toni-Marie), Lilly Beth Kirby, Emilyn Kirby, Kenan Kirby; two step grandchildren, Laura Switzer (Dave), Eric Wolfe; a great-grandson, Thompson Rhett Kirby; two step-great-granddaughters, Caroline and Annie Switzer; a sister, Vicki Lanier, Spartanburg, SC.
The funeral will be Monday afternoon, September 14th at 2 o’clock, cryptside at the Southlawn Cemetery Mausoleum with Military Honors Accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
