Aiken - On September 12, 2019, Bob died the way he lived, adored by family and friends at his home of 56 years in Aiken, South Carolina. He was born December 23rd, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama to Ruby and Edgar Lawson. Then spent much of his childhood in Florence, Alabama where he met his next door neighbor, and the love of his life, Faye Roberson. In addition to his wife Faye, he is survived by his sons Scott (Becky) Lawson, Marietta, Georgia and Bill (Dana) Lawson, Aiken, South Carolina. He was the proud grandfather of Kristina (Greg) Wise, Aiken; Brooke Lawson, Charlotte, NC; Buck Lawson, Anchorage, AK; Abby Lawson, Charleston, SC; and Will Lawson, Marietta, GA. Bob was blessed with two great-granddaughters, Layla and Ella Wise, Aiken. His sisters, Doris Chandler and Gloria (Jim) Russell live in Florence, Alabama. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his dear brother, Jerry Lawson. Bob died a loved and important man. He was a man in the service of his fellow men, of unshakeable conviction, of integrity and honor. He was a veteran who served without hesitation in the Army during both WWII and Korea as a communications specialist. He was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church and retired from Savannah River Plant with more than forty years of service. He excelled at growing tomatoes and pickling okra, at producing endless hydrangea blossoms, grilling the perfect steak and repairing anything mechanical. He loved camping, fishing and all sports, playing football and baseball in his younger years and later coaching for church and city leagues. He was the quiet and humble champion who encouraged young men in sport and life. He was an avid Clemson fan, IPTAY member and season ticket holder in Death Valley from the 1950’s until the last few years. After retiring, he changed his address to Twin Lakes campground every football season to witness the Tigers’ victory and share his love of life with fellow campers. Anyone who knew Bob knew him as a gentleman, a kind man, a good friend. Above all he was a family man in the greatest sense. Bob dearly loved his family and friends. The family would like to thank Kindred Hospice for their loving care shown to Bob during his illness. Dianne Taylor and Cindy Crawford were loyal and loving caregivers that lifted our spirits and saw to his comfort with gentle hands. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Baptist Church on Vaucluse Road in Aiken, SC at 2:00pm Saturday, September 21st with Rev. Charles Jenkins officiating. The family invites friends to join them at a reception in the family life building following the service. In lieu of flowers, Bob requested that donations be sent to Memorial Baptist Church or Connie Maxwell Children’s home as he believed in their mission of spreading God’s grace.
