RUBY GLENN CURTIS, 99, widow of Robert Lee Curtis, passed away Monday evening, January 6, 2025 in Edgefield Post Acute Care.
Born on July 6, 1925, in Augusta, GA, Ruby was the daughter of the late Raymond L. Floyd and Bernice Elizabeth Glenn Brest. Shortly after her birth, the family relocated to Charleston, SC, where she attended Memminger High School and graduated from Murray Vocational School in 1943.
In her early career, Ruby worked as a secretary for the manager of Western Union, before dedicating herself to raising her children. She later contributed her skills as a secretary for the Holmes Avenue Baptist Church in North Charleston and also worked at Sunbeam Corp. in Denmark, SC.
At the age of 47, Ruby pursued further education and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She dedicated her nursing career to the old Orangeburg Hospital and Bamberg Hospital before retiring following the passing of her husband in 1985. Ruby then moved to Summerfield, FL, with a brief stay in Forks, WA, before finally settling in Aiken, SC, in 2002. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children, Glenn Curtis, Summerville, SC, Bruce Curtis (Judy), North Augusta, SC, Allison Curtis Harris (Robert), Forks, WA, Melanie Curtis Powell, Luray, SC; grandchildren, Robert Curtis, Michael Bair (Ami), Alisa Thoms (Bryan), Daniel Davis, Cody Davis (Rebecca), Josh Powell (Katy), Aaron Powell; seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Robert Lee Curtis; granddaughter, Tina Curtis Nicholson; great-grandson, Andrew Nicholson and her identical twin sister, Ruth Glenn McGrew.
The family will receive friends Thursday morning, January 9th beginning at 10 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11 o’clock in the chapel with The Rev. Darryl Engle officiating. In honor of Ruby’s nursing career, The Nightingale Tribute and Final Call to Duty will be accorded by the South Carolina Nurses Honor Guard. The interment will take place at 3 o’clock that afternoon in Carolina Memorial Park, North Charleston.
