NEW ELLENTON, SC – EARL MARTIN, 89, husband of the late Bettye Banks Martin, died Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at his residence.A native of Springville, AL, Earl was a son of the late James Benjamin and Rose Zanna Simmons Martin, Sr. He served in the United States Marines during World War II. Earl moved to Aiken County in 1953 to work for DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. He retired as a tritium operator after 34 ½ years. He was very active in the New Ellenton Community over the years. He was one of the founders of New Ellenton Dixie Youth Baseball and the American Legion Brown/Delucia Post. He was a longtime Master of Cub Scout Troop 409 and was a former member of New Ellenton City Council.Survivors include three daughters, Decia Brittain (Randy), New Ellenton, Marcia Hall (Jerry), New Ellenton, Mona Martin (Norma), Aiken; a son, Jeffrey Martin, New Ellenton; seven grandchildren, Marty Brittain, Missy Cowden, Kristal Hicks, Jay Hall, Lindsey Plemmons, Nikki Martin, Tyler Martin; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, September 2nd beginning at 1 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 o’clock with Chuck Hill officiating.
