STANLEY E SMITH, 89, beloved husband of Barbara Ross Smith, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 17, 2024 in Aiken Regional Medical Centers with his loving family by his side.
Born in Macon, GA, Stanley grew up in North Charleston, SC, a son of the late Charles Albert Smith, Sr., and Velma Johnson Smith. He was a proud 1956 graduate of Clemson University. After graduation, Stanley began his career as a mechanical engineer with DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. He served 2 years active duty in the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Following his military service, Stanley returned to the Savannah River Plant to continue his career until his retirement in 1993. He was an active member of Aiken’s First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School and served on numerous committees. Throughout his life, Stanley volunteered with many other community organizations. After retirement, he directed his energies to the Aiken Hospital Auxiliary and Rotary Club of Aiken.
Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Barbara; three children, Karen Coghill (Tim), Mountain Brook, AL, Kevin Smith (Marie), North Augusta, SC, Kelli Johnson (Ricky), Lumberton, NC; ten grandchildren, Kimberly Coghill (Bryan), Matthew Coghill (Paige), Griffin Coghill (Kristin), Travis Smith (Erica), Katie McCaskill (Mason), Andrew Smith (Amber), Allie Smith, Madison Allen, Lynsey Hoppes (Peyton), Erin Johnson; ten great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; six siblings, Geraldine Stachewicz, Patricia Puckett, John Smith, Barbara Jones, Judy Barton, Richard Smith (Gale). In addition to his parents, Stanley was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Corcoran and a brother, Charles Smith, Jr.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday afternoon, February 21st at 1 o’clock at Aiken’s First Baptist Church with The Rev. John Carroll officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In honor of Stanley’s love for Clemson, attendees are kindly requested to wear something orange (tie, scarf, sweater, pin, etc.) to the service. Private interment will be held earlier Wednesday in Southlawn Cemetery.
