STEPHEN MICHAEL MEAD, 83, husband of the late Judy Little Mead, entered into the presence of the Lord, Monday, October 21, 2024.
A native of Lake City, IA, Steve was a son of the late Robert and Annie Mead. He grew up on a pig farm and later attended Iowa State University.
In 1963, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served with distinction in the elite Second Force Reconnaissance Company, completing his service in 1967. Soon after, he met Judy, who would become his devoted partner. Steve spent several years in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and worked with Odell & Associates and later Gold Bond Building Products.
In 1991, Steve relocated to Aiken, South Carolina, where he began his career at Westinghouse's Savannah River Site, ultimately retiring in 2018 as a senior civil engineer.
A dedicated member of Mercy Church, Stephen taught Sunday School for 26 years, sharing his faith and knowledge with his community. His passions included shooting sports, fly fishing, and woodworking, reflecting his love for the outdoors and craftsmanship.
Surviving are three sons, Michael Mead, Elizabethton, TN, David Mead, Monroe, NC, Jonathan Mead (Louvene), Sharon, SC; four grandchildren, Christian Mead, Emma Mead, John Gordon Mead and J. J. Mead and a sister, Bonnie Owens, Glidden, IA. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Steve was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Mead.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, October 30th beginning at 1 o’clock at Mercy Church. A Celebration of Steve’s Life will follow at 2 o’clock with Pastor Kenny Murphy officiating. Interment will be in Southlawn Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be his sons and grandsons.
