AIKEN, SC – THOMAS WILLIAM BURNS, 38, died suddenly, Monday, April 17, 2017 at his residence. A native of Baltimore, MD, Tom was a son of Elizabeth “Bitsy” Smith Burns and the late Michael Joseph Burns. He lived in Aiken since 1993 and graduated from South Aiken High School in 1996.  He worked for 17 years as a customer service representative for SCANA.  He was currently earning a degree in industrial maintenance at Aiken Technical College and working at Kroger.  Tom was formerly active in the DAN organization, fostering and transporting Dobermans.  He was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his sister, Michele B. Maynard (David); his brother, Timothy M. Burns; his fiancée, Rebecca Young; step-children, Danielle Turner, Nick Young, nieces, Michaela and Marina Maynard, all of Aiken; paternal grandparents, Ron and Rose Burns, Hanover, PA and his two dogs, Roma and Bailey. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, April 20th from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated Friday morning, at 11 o’clock at Old St. Mary’s on Park Ave., with The Very Rev. Gregory Wilson as celebrant. Final prayers and commendations will follow in Historic Bethany Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be David Clarke, Carlos Ortega, Tim Burns, Nick Young, Keith Gray. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Aiken SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare (www.letlovelive.org).
