Thomas Leland McPherson

THOMAS LELAND “TOM” McPHERSON, 81, beloved husband of Joan Willing McPherson, passed away Tuesday evening, December 10, 2024 in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Tom was the son of the late Thomas Dargan and Sara Cooper McPherson. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and went on to have a noteworthy career with Norfolk Southern Railroad, where he retired as a switchman. Tom enjoyed a variety of pursuits, including golfing, classic country music and playing chess. He had a deep passion for raising and racing homing pigeons for many years until health concerns led him to step back from this cherished hobby. He loved traveling across the country on his motorcycle. After marrying Joan in 1997, she joined him on his travels. They also enjoyed attending dirt track races, NASCAR races and steel guitar conventions together. In addition, Tom cultivated a love for gardening, with a special fondness for azaleas and roses. He also enjoyed riding bicycles, and in his later years, took up road cycling.

Survivors in addition to his beloved wife of 27 years, Joan, include his daughter, Natalie McPherson (Boris Haranki), Idaho Falls, ID; his son, Clint McPherson, Augusta, GA; a granddaughter, Scarlett Lainey; three sisters, Sarah Edund, Augusta, GA, Janet Ulteig (Rev. Michael), Beech Island, SC and Gale Brice, Augusta, GA.

A private service, celebrating Tom’s life will be held at his sister, Sarah’s home.
