AIKEN, SC - Mr. Walter Edwin Kircher, 90, died at Pepper Hill Nursing Home on March 18, 2019. He had been a resident of Cumberland Village for the past year and a resident of Pitman, NJ for 78 years. He was born May 21, 1928 in Mantua, NJ to the late Edwin and Martha Kircher. He was married for 52 years to the late Dolores Raine Kircher. He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Chuck and Cheryl Kircher of Aiken, SC, granddaughter, Lindsay Kircher Dukes of Augusta, GA, special nephew, Frank Kircher of Pitman, NJ, nieces and nephews and his very special and dear friend, Norma Turner of Southern Pines, NC. He was also preceded in death by his son, Stephen, and his three brothers and two sisters.
He worked at E I DuPont, Deep Water, NJ for 33 years and was a Mechanical Supervisor at his retirement in April 1983. He was a past member and a 1st Assistant Fire Chief of the Pitman Fire Patrol for 63 years. He was known as “Mr. Pitman”. He knew the history of Pitman, NJ like the back of his hand. Ask him anything about his childhood and teen years and his steel trap of a mind would bring up events that you had long forgotten. He was a 1948 graduate of Pitman High School where he had excelled in baseball and basketball. He was elected to the Pitman High School Hall of Fame in November 2007. He was scouted by the Philadelphia National League Club, The Phillies, in May 1947, the American League Baseball Club of New York, Inc., The Yankees, in July 1948 and the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, Dodgers, in July 1948.
The family would like to thank the nursing staffs of Pepper Hill Nursing Home and Encompass Hospice for their kindness and compassion in caring for Mr. Kircher.
Mr. Kircher will be laid to rest in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, NJ.
